Background:

St Mabyn School is situated in a small rural village in North Cornwall. Its buildings are an interesting mix of the old and new. The oldest building dates from 1859 and has classrooms on two floors. The school house has been extensively converted to form a library administration area and accommodation for staff and the headteacher. In 1991 a new classroom, indoor cloackrooms, dining space and kitchen were added. The school has two playgrounds and an adjacent field which is used extensively for sport and playtime. The school offers a range of extra-curricular activities including chess, football, netball, recorder, infant gym and computer clubs. Tuition for woodwind, guitar, violin, cello, flute and clarinet is also arranged. Sport is strongly encouraged and the school participates in district sports events annually. Swimming is a very important part of the curriculum and the children all learn swimming and water safety skills. The school is approximately one hundred and fifty years old and is situated in the heart of the village next to the Parish Church. The school buildings are an interesting mix of the older Victorian style and the new. The school has been extensively modernised to provide a large infant classroom which was added in 1991 and a new Reception and Secretary's Office in 2002. The old school house has been transformed to create an ICT suite, staff room and administration accommodation. The school is involved with the community through the Church, parents, the pre-school, governors and the villagers who regularly receive newsletters and are invited to school function such as 'Hamlets Breakfast' presentation evening. The school community works effectively to develop a caring, polite environment where all pupils can succeed.
