Background:
Founded in 1842, the school has since been extended and developed. It now has a main building with three classrooms, a 'large' hall, a kitchen and staffroom, a new cloakroom and the headteacher's office and library. In the grounds there are a playground, a field with a wildlife area, ponds and an enclosure for guinea pigs and chickens. A 'wide range' of clubs are on offer, taken by staff, parents and governors. These include football, netball, tag rugby, computer and guitar, rated 'not bad for a small school!' by the headteacher. Music tuition is also available for violin, woodwind and keyboard. 'Around 20-25%' of the school participates in this. Carnkie is 'at the heart' of the local community, and sings in a carol service in the local chapel each year and entertains and is 'making use of' a 'wide range' of local people and institutions to 'enhance' the school curriculum. To 'broaden the children's learning experiences' the school offers trips, including a regular London visit for the older children. In addition, the school runs 'many' local/national fund-raising events.
