Background:
A 'very caring and happy' village school on the Lizard peninsula in Cornwall, Garras is housed in a Victorian building dating from 1870 and a more recent temporary building. Surrounding the buildings are 'pleasant' grassy areas and an environmental garden. Pupils are drawn mainly from the village, with some travelling from nearby rural areas. A 'broad, balanced and exciting' curriculum is on offer, with an emphasis on learning out-of-doors. In addition to year-round swimming lessons, every summer the physical education curriculum includes sailing and canoeing, and a residential camp is arranged. Pupils can use a recreation hall for musical productions. The school prides itself on 'close, on-going' links with the community and with the local church. Regular visits are made to an old people's home. Local musicians and artists have worked with the school, most recently on a totem pole designed by pupils and carved by a local sculptor, and now standing in the school's new recreation area.
