Background:

South Petherwin Community Primary School founded in 1873 in the centre of the village. The school moved in 1980 to a new building was opened by the Prince of Wales, after the original building became structurally unstable. Children are drawn from a very wide area, with parents choosing South Petherwin for its high standing in the community and academic results. Some years are over-subscribed. The attractive school occupies a one-storey brick building with an unusually shaped roof, topped by a glass pyramid. It is surrounded by grounds containing lawns, a playing field and playground, an activity area and a pupils' garden, created as part of a major Design and Technology project. A wide variety of trees borders the premises and it is traditional for Year 6 pupils to plant a tree in the front garden when they leave. Sporting fixtures are arranged against other schools and there are regular parents versus pupil's sports evenings. It offers extra social, sporting and musical activities. The school's balanced and broad curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to take part in both local and national competitions and functions. The school recently gained the bronze certificate in The Queens Royal Anniversary Trust's Schools Awards, presented to pupils at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Money is raised for charity, and particularly for less fortunate children. The school benefits from the full support of parents.
