Background:
St Mewan Primary's original building dates back to 1874 and now houses the reception and nursery classes. The main school buildings and three Elliot huts house the infant and junior classes. In addition, facilities include a library, a computer suite, hall, hard playing areas and 'large' playing fields including a cricket square. A disused swimming pool is currently being converted into a science classroom. The school provides an after-school childcare club and has plans to extend this to pre-school and holiday clubs. Children may take part in French, art and sports after school. In 1998, a partnership was set up with a local private school and with schools abroad. The school also works with organisations closers to home, such as playgroups and the local church to develop community links. The school is over-subscribed in some years.
