Background:

Harrowbarrow School founded in 1872 to serve the Tamar Valley villages of Harrowbarrow and Metherell. The school is located 15 miles from Plymouth and 10 miles west of Tavistock. The old Victorian school has been enhanced by major extensions and refurbishments in the last 10 years and a further extension was opened in 2000. The extensive school grounds contain a swimming pool, environmental studies area, wildlife pond, reception safe play area, netball courts and soccer pitches. In addition to four classrooms, the school offers a library, music room and resources room, while it uses an adjacent community hall for functions, games and performances. Some of the school's 12 computers are linked to the internet, others used for RM's new integrated learning system. The school has established a reputation for high academic standards and was recently awarded a National Standards Achievement Award. Music, drama and outdoor activities enhance the basic curriculum. In competitive sports the school has won awards in athletics, cross-country running, soccer, rugby and netball. Children have the opportunity to learn a variety of instruments and the school orchestra gives regular public performances. The school is fortunate to be near Dartmoor, the Tamar Valley and the National Trust estate of Cotehele, all of which are used to enhance pupil's learning. Links with the local community are considered important and pupils take part in events such as May Day celebrations and summer music evenings, in addition to fund raising activities. The school PSA provides valuable practical support.
