Background:

The new school opened in January 1998, on the site of an Iron Age hill fort. The grounds house 'excellent' and 'up-to-date' facilities, including an amphitheatre with 'wonderful' views to Caradon Hill. A special unit exists for pupils with Special Educational Needs and individual support means that 'the gifted thrive' in the school. There is at least one networked computer in every classroom. Teaching values children's individuality and parents are 'warmly' welcomed to maintain involvement with their child's education. Pupils study programmes of health education and environmental education, which involves each child planting and caring for a tree. A 'wide' range of physical education activities includes swimming, athletics and gymnastics, and there are also extra-curricular clubs offering rugby, cricket, table tennis, basketball and football. All children participate in a school sports day and some play in inter-school tournaments and at county level. Pupils are also given opportunities to take part in outdoor pursuits such as orienteering, cycling and hiking and to attend a residential adventure activity centre. All children can receive individual tuition in their chosen musical instrument and Year 6 pupils perform in a 'Leavers' Production', often of a Shakespeare play. The school provides a climate where children are encouraged to 'question and explore for meaning and purpose in life'.
